The media revealed a jump in gold production in Mauritania since the outbreak of the Corona pandemic, thanks to the "disappearance of the black market" due to the interruption of air traffic under the pandem.
The "Desert Media" website quoted sources in the field of exploration that since March 15, gold miners have extracted more than 500 kilograms of gold, which is a very large number compared to the 1,000 kilograms they produced before the pandemic, that is, throughout the period from December 2016 (beginning Excavation) until last March.
According to the data, the Mauritanian Central Bank branch in the city of Zouerate has purchased a quantity of gold since last March, amounting to about 100 billion ounces of old (about 2.62 million dollars).
Whereas, during the previous three years before the pandemic, he bought 120 billion old ounces ($ 3.15 million).
According to the head of the office supervising the treatment of gold-saturated stones in Azurat, Mohamed Ould Boto, the large increase in revenues from gold exploration is due to the "disappearance of the black market."
Ould Boutou explained that the suspension of international flights completely cut off the connection with the black market, which led to a cessation of the bleeding of large quantities of gold that were being exported by "illegal" ways abroad.
He added that the Corona pandemic, which hit the world economy, caused gold prices to rise as a safe haven.
